Drive-In Movies; Do-Overs: Making Space for Play When Life Got Too Serious

July 29, 2025  • Karen Brandmeyer

Drive-in movies remind us that play does not have to be complicated. A blanket, popcorn, a familiar movie, and a night under the stars can become a small do-over when life has gotten too serious for too long.

Somewhere along the way, life got serious. Bills, work, parenting, loss, deadlines, the kind of weight that makes fun feel like something you can only have after every problem is solved. Which means, for a lot of people, fun keeps getting pushed to some future date that never quite arrives.

And then you remember there's a drive-in 13 minutes away.

They're still out there and they're still great

Drive-in movies used to be everywhere, and then they weren't, and now the ones that survived feel like something worth protecting. The one nearby does double features — which is a lot of movie for the price, even if the second feature runs so late that little kids are fully asleep by the time it starts. That's just the reality of the double feature. You budget for it, you bring the blankets, and you decide ahead of time whether the kids are sleeping in the backseat or going home at intermission.

The old carload deals were something else — pile everyone in, pay one price, done. That era is mostly gone now, but the spirit of it isn't. Back of a pickup truck with a blanket and a cooler is still one of the better ways to watch a movie under the sky. An SUV works too, though the sight lines get complicated depending on where you park.

What a drive-in actually gives you

It gives you a pocket of the old version of life, the one where entertainment didn't require much and fun didn't need to be impressive. You don't need a perfect outfit. You don't need a reservation. You show up, you find your spot, you pass the popcorn, and for a couple of hours the movie plays and the world asks a little less of you.

There's room to be comfortable in a way that a regular theater doesn't really allow. Room to laugh, to whisper, to let the kids climb around, to share a blanket when the air cools down after dark. Nobody's watching you. Nobody needs anything impressive from you. You just sit there and watch the story.

Play is not a luxury item

When life has been heavy for a long time, play starts to feel irresponsible. Like you haven't earned it yet, like there's still too much to handle before you're allowed to enjoy something. But that's not how it works. Play isn't denial. It isn't pretending nothing hurts. It's just one way you remember that what you've been through doesn't get to own every room in your life.

A double feature at a drive-in 13 minutes from your house is not a big ask. It's a blanket, some snacks, a car, and a couple of hours outside. That's it. And sometimes that's exactly enough to remind you that ordinary life can still surprise you with something good.

The family version

Drive-ins work because everyone can experience the same night differently and it still works. The little kids care about the snacks and staying up past bedtime. The teenagers care about sitting somewhere with some independence. The adults care about the nostalgia of the thing and maybe the second feature. Grandparents might remember when this was just what you did on a summer night.

Nobody needs the same reason for being there. The night holds all of them at once.

Bring pajamas for the kids. Bring the blankets and the cooler. Get popcorn from the concession stand at least once because that's part of it. If the kids fall asleep during the second movie, that's fine — they were there for the first one and they'll remember it.

A do-over doesn't have to be dramatic

Sometimes a do-over isn't rebuilding your whole life. Sometimes it's just saying yes to a night out when you've been staying home too much. Taking your kids somewhere simple and good. Laughing at something on a big screen under a dark sky while the air cools down and the blanket gets passed across the seat.

A do-over can be as simple as giving today the softness yesterday didn't have.
